Welcome to the new cjblunt.com

3 minute read

After twelve years, cjblunt.com has a new look. If you’ve visited before, you’ll notice the difference straight away. If you’re new here, welcome.

Why the change

I set this site up on WordPress in the final stages of my PhD, and for an academic at that point it was a sensible choice: easy to get started with and flexible enough for what I needed. The internet has moved on a great deal since then, and the old site was showing its age. It was slow to load, fiddly to maintain, and its layout no longer reflected the work I actually do.

The new site is faster, more responsive and much simpler for me to look after. More importantly, it’s built to give a proper home to both sides of my work: my research in the philosophy of medicine, and my teaching on LSE100, the interdisciplinary course I co-direct at LSE.

How the site works

Everything is now organised into three sections:

  • Research covers my work on the philosophy of medicine and evidence, with my papers and chapters collected under Research > Papers.
  • Teaching & AI is for my work on interdisciplinary education, LSE100 and the use of AI in higher education.
  • WritePhilosophy holds my guides for students on writing philosophy.

Announcements like this one are collected under News, and the archive lists everything on the site by date.

A few other changes are worth knowing about. You can now search the full text of every paper, post and guide, using the magnifying glass at the top of any page. Footnotes sit in the margin beside the text on wider screens, and pop up when you hover over or tap them on smaller ones. Pages load much more quickly, and the layout works properly on phones. Images also now carry descriptions for people using screen readers. If you prefer to follow along in a feed reader, there’s an RSS feed too.

Every post has kept its old address, and old links to images, PDFs, the previous RSS feed and the old guides page all forward to their new homes. Any bookmarks or links you already have should still work.

A fresh start for WritePhilosophy

This is as much a relaunch of WritePhilosophy as of my own site. Many readers come here for the guides, and I wanted them to be easier to find, read and use. They are now arranged in groups that follow the order of the writing process, so you can work through them from first steps to finished essay or go straight to the part you need. writephilosophy.com takes you straight to them, so whichever address you remember, you’ll end up in the right place.

Watch this space

Last year I was an LSE AI and Education Fellow, and I have a lot to share from it. Over the coming months I’ll be adding reflections on that year and more on my work with LSE100 to the Teaching & AI section, so do check back.

How it was built

I had help with the move from Claude, Anthropic’s AI model. It suggested the best way to host the new site, walked me step by step through getting it uploaded and working, and helped me troubleshoot and fix bugs along the way. Moving twelve years of posts and guides off an old platform could easily have been a slog. Instead it turned out to be a fairly painless transition, which, given how much of my working life is now spent thinking about AI in education, felt like a useful experiment in its own right.
